Online Lecture Series 5: Exploring Japan's Museums
For lovers of Japan’s various artistic traditions, there are many different museums all over Japan. Some are public institutions, while others house the collections of private collectors. Some are encyclopedic in their holdings, while others are devoted to a particular type of art or to a specific artist. Many are works of art in their own right, built by some of the world’s foremost architects. Japan’s museums are the subjects of 24 videos in the Japan Foundation’s Doors to the Arts of Japan series.
In this final online lecture, Japanese art historian Meher McArthur will introduce a few of her favorite museums and their collections. With travel season approaching soon, she will also include several museums featured in the video series that she has yet to visit but is excited to on her next trip to Japan.

The term “yakishime” refers to the firing of unglazed clay vessels at a high temperature so that the clay vitrifies, creating water-proof and durable stoneware ceramics. With no colorful glaze or painted designs, this ceramic type may seem simple or “primitive,” but Japan’s yakishime wares are some of the country’s most admired and valuable ceramics. The scorch marks of Bizen ware, the feldspar...

Hina dolls, in particular, wear kimono and elaborate hairstyles, and for several centuries have been central in Hina Matsuri, a traditional festival celebrating girls. Others, such as turned-wood Kokeshi, finely sculpted Saga dolls, papier mache Hariko dolls, and folded paper Chiyogami dol...

Our colleagues in California are showing us a strong model for how to thoughtfully consider ACTFL's core practices and how to apply them to our classes, as well as how we can plan together. Certainly, there are many Japanese teachers who do not have colleagues in the same building, but we can find connections and collaborate from afar too!
The conversation segments of these videos is so helpful! These videos are not just showing how we could work with students, but also how we can discuss our teaching in useful ways with other teachers.
Thank for this thoughtful video and for always collaborating!
Thank you so much for all that you do to improve Japanese education in California and throughout the United States!
very nice! love this. keep up the good work ! s
Love this! :)
Tell all my friends I miss them

What most Koreans didn't know was the fact that most animations they grew up with were actually Japanese and there were a lot of artists in South Korea who are outraged by this deceitful action allowed by the authorities. This movement started more than 3 decades ago. You know your own talents growing up as a child and you start to dream of being the artist someday and all the sudden, you not only realize but you're told that your art is Japanese. And what happens after 6 decades of same propaganda on South Korean kids?
